Protein - how much is enough, and how much is too much for women navigating perimenopause?

Did you know there's such a thing as getting TOO MUCH protein?

Many people don't talk about this - so let's dive in!

Protein is a hot topic in the nutrition and wellness space! Protein is a vital macronutrient, especially crucial as we hit 'middle age'. But how much is enough, and when does it become too much?

Spoiler alert: yes, excessive protein intake carries certain health risks. On the flip side, you may be wondering, how to meet your protein needs without constant macro-counting or relying on protein shakes and bars.

Protein is a cornerstone for vibrant health, building muscles, supporting hormones, and nourishing bones. However, the debate on the ideal protein source for women over 40 is still ongoing. Whether it's high-quality animal protein or plant-based options, bio-individuality plays a crucial role. I encourage experimentation to find what aligns with your body's needs.

The recommended daily protein intake is around 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, but it varies based on activity levels, goals, and lean body mass!

Too much protein can pose risks like calcium loss, cancer, kidney strain, and heart disease. Balancing protein sources and being mindful of cooking methods can mitigate these risks.

Getting enough protein doesn't have to be a daunting task. I shared what I eat in a typical day to get enough plant-based protein intake in THIS PODCAST EPISODE – from protein rich breakfast sautés and smoothies on the go, to snacks and dinners. If you're considering a plant-based approach, options like tofu scrambles, lentil curries, or chickpea pasta can be delicious and they're all plant based protein-packed and nutrient dense meals.
